Welcome to num44, your go-to community hub in Woodstock, the Cotswolds, UK.
“The club was the linchpin of community life”
For rural villages and small towns, the club has traditionally been the go-to venue for large community gatherings, to dance, act, play, to laugh, party, get married, to celebrate family and friends, make memories and to remember those community members who came before us.
Woodstock's former club was founded over 100 years ago in 1920 after it was established as a meeting place for service personnel who had returned home after the Great War of 1914-18. Originally based at 7 High Street, the old club was a thriving space for all the community, veterans of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, other local regiments, and during WW2, the Royal Engineers and American servicemen who were stationed around Woodstock, latterly including United States Air Force personnel from 1970 until 1993.
Sir Winston Churchill would regularly visit his birthplace at Blenheim Palace and as he walked past the old club in the High Street, he could pop in at any time to greet his fellow soldiers, to share a cigar, his favourite whiskey and re-tell some wartime tales.
