NUMBER 44  |  COMMUNITY SPACE  |  WOODSTOCK

Our Story

For over a century, No.44 (previously known as the Woodstock Social Club) has been part of community life in the town. Originally founded in 1920 as a social club for returning servicemen after the First World War, it quickly became a gathering place for veterans, families and the wider community.

It was a place to meet friends, share stories, celebrate milestones and support one another during changing times.

In those early years the club was on Woodstock’s High Street, (situated behind The Woodstock Arms pub), welcoming former members of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and other local regiments. During the Second World War the club continued to play an important role, bringing together servicemen stationed locally, including the Royal Engineers and later American forces who were based around Woodstock.

The club also boasts a connection to Sir Winston Churchill, who was born at nearby Blenheim Palace. When visiting his birthplace, Churchill was sometimes known to stop by the club, to share a whiskey, swap stories with fellow soldiers and to appreciate the camaraderie of wartime.

During the decades that followed, the club evolved into a much-loved community venue.

It was a place where people of all ages gathered; to dance, to celebrate weddings and birthdays, watch sport and enjoy music and entertainment - coming together for moments and occasions that shaped community life.

Like many traditional social clubs across the UK, changing lifestyles and economic pressures have put these important community places at risk. Prominent in industrialised towns and cities, around 2,000 are still open, from miners’ welfare halls and working men’s clubs to all kinds of social clubs, with many reimagining themselves for a new generation.

That is why several members of the original committee have joined, to form the Woodstock Community Benefit Society, with a mission to protect this historic venue and ensure it continues to serve the town for generations to come.

Today, No.44 is
entering a new chapter.

Through community ownership and shared vision, the aim is to transform the building into a vibrant, inclusive hub. A place for events, gatherings, conversation and connection.

Our story began over a century ago with a simple idea, of creating a space for people to come together.

With the support of the community and beyond, we believe that story will continue for another 100 years.
